The Acorns Bereavement Support Service (ABSS) runs bereavement support programmes for bereaved people in Edinburgh and the Lothians. Each programme runs for six weeks and covers a range of topics relating to grief, loss and bereavement.
Acorns believes bereavement is a journey to be travelled and not an illness to be cured or a problem to be solved. With this is mind the Acorns Bereavement Support Service offers support and understanding to those experiencing loss and grief. A range of issues surrounding grief, loss and bereavement are covered.
The programs are primarily aimed at people in the first year of loss, but are open to anyone who feels they may benefit. The programmes are designed to reassure those going through their process of loss and restore confidence that there is a viable future for them. There is a group focus on normalising feelings surrounding loss. One participant described the programme as a ‘a tool-kit for self-help’.
Each week of the programme focuses on a particular aspect of the journey of loss. The programme also includes opportunities to think about issues such as: cooking and looking after yourself; health issues, money matters; socialising; and planning for the future.
Above all an Acorns programme is designed to offer an opportunity to relax with like-minded people, and perhaps even find time to smile again.
There is no formal registration for these programmes, but you may wish to get in touch if you intend to come along – just so we can be aware of numbers in advance
